Step 1: Perform visual inspection of oil change reset button and surrounding area for signs of physical damage, moisture, or debris. Locate the button (typically in instrument cluster, glove box, or center console depending on vehicle) and check for any obvious damage.

Step 2: Disconnect the oil change reset button connector and inspect terminals for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture. Using a multimeter set to ohms, measure resistance between the button signal wire terminal (at harness side) and ground with button disconnected. Reading should be infinite (open circuit); any measurable resistance indicates a short to ground in the wiring.

Step 3: With button still disconnected, clear the code and observe if it returns. If code does not return, test the button switch itself by measuring resistance across button terminals while pressing and releasing. Should show open circuit when not pressed and low resistance (typically less than 5 ohms) when pressed. Replace button if internal short is detected.

Step 4: If wiring short is confirmed in Step 2, trace the wiring harness from button to BCM checking for pinch points, chafing against sharp edges, or damage near moving components. Pay special attention to areas where harness passes through firewall, door jambs, or under carpet where water intrusion occurs.

Step 5: Repair or replace damaged wiring/connectors as needed. Reconnect all components, clear codes, and verify proper button operation by pressing reset button while monitoring live data for signal response. Confirm code does not return and oil change reminder resets properly when button is pressed.
