What Does C1201 Mean?
The ABS control module has detected a short-to-ground fault on the left front (LF) inlet valve solenoid coil circuit. The inlet valve solenoid is critical for modulating brake pressure during ABS activation. With this fault, the ABS system is disabled and the ABS warning lamp illuminates. Normal braking remains functional but without anti-lock protection.
Common Causes
35%
Wiring harness chafing against a grounded metal surface, wearing through insulation and grounding the LF inlet valve circuit
30%
Internal short to ground within the LF inlet valve solenoid coil from moisture intrusion into the hydraulic modulator
20%
Corroded connector terminal or water intrusion at the modulator plug creating a conductive path to ground
15%
ABS control module internal ground fault on the valve driver output
Diagnostic Steps
1
Disconnect the ABS modulator connector. Measure LF inlet valve solenoid coil resistance (spec: 3-6 ohms). Then measure from each solenoid pin to the connector body/chassis ground; any continuity indicates the solenoid is internally shorted to ground.
2
If the solenoid tests good, disconnect the ABS module connector and check each LF inlet valve wire for continuity to ground. A near-zero reading pinpoints a harness short.
3
Inspect the harness routing from the modulator up to the ABS module. Pay close attention to areas where the harness passes through body panels, near sharp edges, or along the frame rail. Look for abraded insulation or pinched wires.
4
Check the modulator connector for signs of water entry, green corrosion on pins, or debris bridging terminals to the connector shell.
5
Repair the shorted wire with proper splice and sealed heat-shrink tubing. Clear codes, road test, and verify ABS operation with a controlled activation test.
Estimated Repair Cost
$100 - $1,200

The most common cause of C1201 (ABS Inlet Valve Coil LF Circuit Short To Ground) is: Wiring harness chafing against a grounded metal surface, wearing through insulation and grounding the LF inlet valve circuit
Typical repair costs for C1201 range from $100 to $1,200, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
The vehicle retains normal braking but ABS is fully disabled. Wheel lockup is possible during hard braking, especially on reduced-traction surfaces. Exercise extra caution in rain, snow, or emergency braking situations until the fault is resolved.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to C1201 to identify the root cause.
