What Does C1214 Mean?
The ABS module has detected an open circuit in the solenoid valve relay contact or coil circuit. The solenoid valve relay provides power to all the ABS valve solenoids in the hydraulic modulator. When this relay circuit is open, none of the inlet or outlet valves can be energized, completely disabling ABS function. The ABS warning lamp will be illuminated.
Common Causes
35%
Failed ABS solenoid valve relay with an open coil winding or welded/stuck contacts
25%
Open circuit in the wiring between the ABS module and the solenoid valve relay coil or contact circuit
20%
Corroded or poor connection at the relay socket or ABS module relay driver pin
10%
Blown fuse in the ABS solenoid valve relay power feed circuit
10%
ABS module internal relay driver transistor failure
Diagnostic Steps
1
Locate the ABS solenoid valve relay (typically in the underhood fuse/relay box or integrated into the ABS module). Remove the relay and check the coil resistance across the coil terminals (spec varies, typically 50-100 ohms). Also check contact continuity when power and ground are applied to the coil.
2
Check the ABS solenoid fuse. Even if it appears good visually, test with a DVOM for continuity. A blown fuse also points to a downstream short that must be diagnosed.
3
With the relay removed, check for battery voltage on the relay socket power feed terminal and ground on the relay coil ground terminal. Missing voltage or ground points to a wiring fault.
4
Inspect the relay socket terminals for corrosion, heat damage, or looseness. Clean or repair as needed.
5
If the relay tests good and wiring is intact, use the scan tool to command the ABS module to activate the relay. If it does not ground the relay coil circuit, the ABS module relay driver has failed.
6
Replace the faulty component, clear codes, and test the ABS system.

The most common cause of C1214 (Solenoid Valve Relay Contact or Coil Circuit Open) is: Failed ABS solenoid valve relay with an open coil winding or welded/stuck contacts
Typical repair costs for C1214 range from $30 to $800, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
All ABS valve solenoids are unpowered, meaning ABS is completely disabled. Normal braking works fine but all four wheels may lock during emergency stops. This code affects the entire ABS system, not just one corner. Repair promptly, especially in wet or winter driving conditions.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to C1214 to identify the root cause.
