What Does C1216 Mean?
The ABS module has detected a short-to-battery-voltage condition on the right front (RF) inlet valve solenoid coil circuit. Unwanted B+ voltage on this circuit prevents the ABS module from properly modulating brake pressure on the right front wheel. ABS is disabled and the warning lamp is illuminated. Normal braking continues to function.
Common Causes
40%
Chafed or melted wiring harness where the RF inlet valve circuit contacts a B+ power wire
25%
Internal short to voltage within the RF inlet valve solenoid coil in the hydraulic modulator
20%
Cross-contamination or pin misalignment in the modulator connector allowing B+ voltage bleed to the valve circuit
15%
ABS module internal fault with voltage feedback on the RF inlet valve driver circuit
Diagnostic Steps
1
Disconnect both the ABS modulator and ABS module connectors. With a DVOM, check for battery voltage on each RF inlet valve wire. Voltage present with both ends disconnected confirms an external short to a power source in the harness.
2
With connectors still disconnected, measure RF inlet valve solenoid coil resistance (spec: 3-6 ohms). Verify no continuity between the coil pins and any adjacent pins in the connector.
3
Trace the harness carefully, inspecting for insulation damage near fuse panels, battery cables, starter wiring, or any other high-current B+ sources.
4
Repair the damaged section using proper automotive-grade splices and sealed heat-shrink tubing. Re-route the harness away from power sources if necessary.
5
Clear codes, verify proper operation with a scan tool bidirectional valve test if available, and road test to confirm ABS activation.
Estimated Repair Cost
$100 - $1,100

The most common cause of C1216 (ABS Inlet Valve Coil RF Circuit Short To Battery) is: Chafed or melted wiring harness where the RF inlet valve circuit contacts a B+ power wire
Typical repair costs for C1216 range from $100 to $1,100, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
Braking remains functional but ABS is completely disabled. The right front wheel may lock under heavy braking, reducing steering control. The short-to-voltage also carries a minor risk of localized wire overheating. Repair should not be postponed.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to C1216 to identify the root cause.
