P009E

Fuel Pressure Relief Control Performance/Stuck Off

What Does P009E Mean?

The PCM has determined that the fuel pressure relief valve is not performing as expected or is mechanically stuck in the closed (off) position. Despite receiving proper electrical commands, the valve fails to relieve fuel rail pressure when needed. This can cause excessive fuel rail pressure, which may damage injectors, fuel rail seals, or high-pressure fuel lines. The driver may notice rough running, fuel smell, or hard starting.

Safety Warning

Excessive fuel rail pressure from a stuck-closed relief valve can rupture seals, cause fuel leaks, and create a fire hazard. Do not drive for extended periods. Repair immediately if fuel odor or visible leaks are present.

Diagnostic Steps

1

Monitor fuel rail pressure PID with the scan tool while the engine is running — compare actual pressure to desired pressure. If actual consistently exceeds desired by more than 10%, the relief valve is not opening.

2

Command the fuel pressure relief valve on using the scan tool's active test function while monitoring fuel rail pressure — pressure should drop noticeably when the valve is commanded open.

3

Verify the solenoid is receiving proper voltage and ground by backprobing the connector while commanding the valve — confirm 12V supply and proper PWM ground signal.

4

Remove the fuel pressure relief valve and inspect for varnish deposits, debris, or mechanical binding of the internal plunger. Attempt to manually actuate the valve.

5

Check the fuel filter and fuel quality — contaminated fuel with water or particulates can gum up precision valve components.

What causes P009E?

The most common cause of P009E (Fuel Pressure Relief Control Performance/Stuck Off) is: Fuel pressure relief valve stuck closed due to internal contamination or varnish buildup

How much does it cost to fix P009E?

Typical repair costs for P009E range from $200 to $800, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.

Is it safe to drive with P009E?

Excessive fuel rail pressure from a stuck-closed relief valve can rupture seals, cause fuel leaks, and create a fire hazard. Do not drive for extended periods. Repair immediately if fuel odor or visible leaks are present.

How do I diagnose P009E?

Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P009E to identify the root cause.
