What Does P0110 Mean?
The ECM has detected a general malfunction in the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor circuit on bank 1. The IAT sensor measures the temperature of air entering the engine so the ECM can adjust fuel injection and ignition timing for optimal combustion. The driver may notice poor fuel economy, rough running, hard starting in cold weather, or a slight loss of power since the ECM will use a default substitute value.
Common Causes
35%
Failed IAT sensor (open or shorted internal thermistor)
25%
Corroded, damaged, or disconnected IAT sensor connector
20%
Broken or chafed wiring in the IAT sensor circuit
15%
Poor ground connection for the IAT sensor signal return
5%
ECM internal fault on IAT input circuit
Diagnostic Steps
1
Check live data for the IAT reading — on a cold engine it should approximate ambient temperature; on a warm engine it may read 10-30 degrees above ambient. A reading of -40°F indicates an open circuit; 280°F+ indicates a short.
2
Inspect the IAT sensor connector for corrosion, spread terminals, or water intrusion. Disconnect and reconnect firmly to verify proper engagement.
3
Using a DVOM, measure the resistance of the IAT sensor across its two terminals. At 68°F (20°C) it should read approximately 2.0-3.0 kOhms; at 212°F (100°C) approximately 180-300 ohms (NTC type).
4
Check wiring continuity from the IAT sensor connector to the ECM connector on both the signal and ground wires. Also check for shorts to power and ground.
5
If the sensor tests within specification and wiring is intact, check the ECM connector pin fit. A loose pin can cause intermittent or total signal loss.

The most common cause of P0110 (Intake Air Temperature Circuit Malfunction Bank 1) is: Failed IAT sensor (open or shorted internal thermistor)
Typical repair costs for P0110 range from $20 to $150, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
Safe to drive. The ECM will substitute a default temperature value. Fuel economy and cold-start performance may be slightly degraded, but there is no immediate safety risk. Repair at your convenience.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P0110 to identify the root cause.
