P0172

Moderate

Oxygen Sensor System Too Rich Fault Bank A

What Does P0172 Mean?

The engine is running too rich on bank 1 (or bank A). The ECM has detected that long-term fuel trim has exceeded the negative correction limit, meaning the system is subtracting more fuel than expected and still cannot achieve stoichiometric ratio. This indicates excess fuel or insufficient air is reaching the cylinders. The driver may notice black exhaust smoke, strong fuel odor, fouled spark plugs, poor fuel economy, and a sulfur smell from the catalytic converter.

Common Causes

30%

Leaking or stuck-open fuel injector(s) delivering excess fuel

Fuel injectors (bank 1)

25%

Faulty MAF sensor over-reporting airflow, causing the ECM to add too much fuel

MAF sensor

20%

High fuel pressure from a faulty fuel pressure regulator or restricted return line

Fuel pressure regulator
Fuel return line

15%

Faulty upstream O2 sensor (bank 1 sensor 1) sending a biased-lean signal

O2 sensor (bank 1 sensor 1)

10%

Saturated charcoal canister purging excessive fuel vapor into the intake

EVAP canister
Purge valve

Diagnostic Steps

1

Check short-term and long-term fuel trims at idle and at 2500 RPM. Combined STFT + LTFT below -20% confirms a rich condition. Note whether the rich condition is only at idle, only under load, or at all RPMs.

2

Inspect fuel pressure at the rail. Spec varies by vehicle (typically 35–65 psi). Pressure significantly above spec points to a faulty regulator or restricted return line.

3

Monitor the upstream O2 sensor (bank 1 sensor 1) waveform. It should switch between 0.1V and 0.9V at approximately 1–3 Hz. A sensor stuck high or biased rich will cause the ECM to over-compensate.

4

With the engine off, pull and inspect spark plugs on bank 1. Heavy black soot indicates rich running. Wet, fuel-fouled plugs suggest injector leakage.

5

Disconnect the EVAP purge valve vacuum line at idle. If fuel trims immediately improve (become less negative), the purge system is allowing excess vapors into the intake. Test the purge valve for proper operation.

6

Check the MAF sensor by comparing the g/s reading to known-good specifications. Also inspect the air filter and intake ducting for restrictions or unmetered air entering after the MAF.

What causes P0172?

The most common cause of P0172 (Oxygen Sensor System Too Rich Fault Bank A) is: Leaking or stuck-open fuel injector(s) delivering excess fuel

How much does it cost to fix P0172?

Typical repair costs for P0172 range from $100 to $800, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.

Is it safe to drive with P0172?

Drive with caution. A rich condition washes oil from cylinder walls (increasing wear), fouls spark plugs, and can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Extended rich running can cause the converter to glow red-hot, posing a fire risk if near flammable materials underneath the vehicle.

How do I diagnose P0172?

Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P0172 to identify the root cause.
