P051F

Easy (DIY)

Positive Crankcase Ventilation Filter Restriction

What Does P051F Mean?

The ECM has detected excessive restriction in the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) filter. This filter cleans the air drawn into the crankcase to replace gases vented through the PCV system. A restricted filter reduces airflow, causing elevated crankcase pressure. The driver may notice increased oil consumption, oil leaks from gaskets, or a slight rough idle.

Common Causes

45%

Clogged or contaminated PCV fresh-air filter element

PCV filter
PCV breather filter

20%

Collapsed or kinked PCV inlet hose restricting airflow to the filter

PCV inlet hose
Hose clamps

15%

PCV valve stuck closed or restricted, increasing filter-side pressure differential

PCV valve

10%

Excessive engine blow-by overloading the PCV system and contaminating the filter prematurely

Piston rings
Cylinder walls

10%

Incorrect PCV filter installed (wrong part number or aftermarket mismatch)

Diagnostic Steps

1

Locate and visually inspect the PCV fresh-air filter. On many vehicles it is in the air cleaner housing or a separate housing on the valve cover. Replace if visibly dirty, oily, or discolored.

2

Check PCV inlet and outlet hoses for kinks, collapse, cracks, or disconnections. Squeeze hoses to check for internal deterioration or blockage.

3

Test PCV system flow by removing the PCV valve and checking it — it should rattle when shaken (spring-type) and allow airflow in one direction only. Replace if stuck or if no rattle is heard.

4

Measure crankcase pressure at the oil fill cap with a manometer at idle — should be slightly negative (-1 to -3 inH2O). Positive pressure after replacing the filter indicates a deeper PCV issue or excessive blow-by.

5

If the filter was recently replaced and the code returns, perform a cylinder leak-down test to rule out excessive blow-by from worn piston rings (acceptable: <10% per cylinder).

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes P051F?

The most common cause of P051F (Positive Crankcase Ventilation Filter Restriction) is: Clogged or contaminated PCV fresh-air filter element

How much does it cost to fix P051F?

Typical repair costs for P051F range from $20 to $150, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.

Is it safe to drive with P051F?

Safe to drive for short distances. A restricted PCV filter causes positive crankcase pressure which can push oil past seals and gaskets. Prolonged driving increases the risk of oil leaks and could cause oil to enter the intake system, fouling spark plugs or the catalytic converter.

How do I diagnose P051F?

Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P051F to identify the root cause.
