What Does C1417 Mean?
The suspension control module has detected a short-to-ground condition in the right front (RF) electronically controlled damper circuit. The damper control wiring is making contact with vehicle ground, preventing proper control of the RF shock absorber's damping characteristics. The adaptive ride system will default the RF damper to a fixed setting.
Common Causes
40%
Chafed or pinched wiring where RF damper harness contacts metal body/suspension parts
25%
Water intrusion and corrosion in the RF damper actuator connector
20%
RF electronic damper actuator coil internally shorted to housing/ground
15%
Suspension control module internal driver fault
Diagnostic Steps
1
Disconnect the suspension control module connector. Measure resistance from each RF damper circuit pin to chassis ground — should be OL (infinite). Low resistance confirms a short to ground.
2
Disconnect the RF damper actuator at the shock absorber. Re-measure at the module connector — if the short clears, the damper actuator is internally shorted.
3
If the short persists, inspect the harness from the module to the damper connector. Pay particular attention to where the harness passes through the wheel well, near the strut tower bolt, and along suspension mounting points.
4
Check the damper actuator connector for standing water, corrosion, or damaged seals. The RF wheel well is exposed to road spray, salt, and debris.
5
Measure the damper actuator coil — typical resistance is 1-5 ohms between pins, and OL from each pin to case. Any measurable resistance to case indicates internal failure.
Estimated Repair Cost

The most common cause of C1417 (Damper RF Circuit Short to Ground) is: Chafed or pinched wiring where RF damper harness contacts metal body/suspension parts
Typical repair costs for C1417 range from $150 to $900, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
The RF damper defaults to a fixed setting, resulting in uneven ride quality. The vehicle is safe to drive but may feel different in corners and over bumps. Handling may be slightly less predictable. No immediate danger, but repair is recommended for optimal ride and handling.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to C1417 to identify the root cause.
